Picture a student who arrived in New York two years ago and is still learning English. Give her a multiple-choice test and you mostly measure her English. Ask her to research a question, revise her work, and defend her thinking in front of a panel, and you find out what she knows. That is what the schools of @intlsnetwork do. At City Hall, their leader, a former principal, described moving her whole school off the Regents and onto six rigorous tasks that every student must complete and defend. The preparation starts in ninth grade. Her words: we did not abandon any academic rigor. We deepened it. Here is why it matters now. A finished essay can be written by a machine in seconds. A defense cannot. When a student has to stand up and explain her own work, in her own words, to people who know the subject, there is no faking it. For an immigrant kid, that is also the fairest test there is. It measures her thinking, not her vocabulary. Thank you @intlsnetwork for showing the city what this looks like.
